What Makes a Great Survival Base?
Ask ten people where they would survive a zombie outbreak and you will hear the same answers: an island, a castle, a military bunker, a mountain. Each solves an obvious early problem. Zombies are easier to handle when they cannot reach you.
But the first safe place is not always the best survival base. A great base must support the people inside it. Every day after the outbreak tests food production, clean water, medical care, maintenance and cooperation.
A castle can survive thousands of zombies outside its gates. It cannot survive an empty granary.
Seven questions before you trust a base
- Can it feed a community? Long-term survival is measured in harvests, not ration packs.
- Is there reliable fresh water? You can defend your walls against the infected. You cannot defend against dehydration.
- Can it be defended? Natural barriers, narrow approaches and controlled entrances buy time.
- Can it sustain itself? A base should become less dependent on the outside world, not more.
- How many people can it support? Population is a calculation between capability and consumption.

Every location on Zombie Bases is judged using the same framework because every community faces the same problems after a zombie outbreak. Can people stay safe, fed, healthy and organised when outside help never arrives?
1. Exposure
Exposure measures pressure from the infected and desperate survivors. Low exposure gives time to organise, plant, repair and make mistakes without immediately dying for them.
2. Maintenance Burden
Some places look invincible until something breaks. The infected do not need to break into a bunker if the bunker slowly breaks itself.
3. Population Capacity
This is not how many people can fit inside the walls. It is how many can live there without consuming the base that protects them.
4. Resource Security
Stored supplies are temporary. Renewable resources create survival: fresh water, food production, timber, fishing, livestock and renewable energy.
5. Adaptability
No survival plan survives contact with the outbreak. Multiple water sources, alternate defensive positions and expandable farmland turn a crisis into a problem rather than a death sentence.
6. Recovery Potential
Every community will suffer setbacks: a failed harvest, fire, breach, disease outbreak or leadership crisis. One bad week should not end the settlement.

Defence Is Only the Beginning
Every survival plan eventually reaches the same conversation: find a castle, take a military base, hide in a bunker. Strong defences feel safe because they solve the most visible problem: keeping zombies outside.
For the first few weeks, that matters enormously. A secure perimeter gives people time to organise, gather supplies and establish routines. The mistake is believing defence remains the most important problem. It does not.
The castle problem
Castles were built to resist attack, but not to support isolated populations forever. Most depended on surrounding farmland, nearby villages, trade routes and labour. A zombie outbreak creates an endless siege. No relief army is coming. No market town is safely delivering grain.

Many zombie survival ideas are dangerous because they are partly true. They solve one problem while ignoring another.
Myth 1: Islands are always safest
Some islands are excellent. Others lack fresh water, farmland or storm resilience. Isolation only helps if life can continue after boats stop coming.
Myth 2: Bigger groups survive longer
Large groups bring skills and consumption. The goal is not the biggest group. It is the right group for the base.

What is the best place to survive a zombie apocalypse? The answer depends on who you are, where you are, what stage the outbreak has reached and what resources you can realistically access.
The highest scoring base on Zombie Bases may not be the best base for you. It may simply be the best base you cannot reach.
If you have time to prepare
Preparation changes everything. A planned relocation lets people establish food production, improve defences, build trust and understand the local environment before the infected arrive.
If the outbreak has already begun
Safety comes first: distance from population centres, reliable shelter, fresh water and low exposure. A perfect long-term base may be too dangerous to reach during the first phase.
Choosing by base type
- Islands: strong isolation, fishing and access control, but water and imports can fail.
- Castles: excellent early defence, weaker indefinite food production.

How Zombie Bases Scores Every Location
A number on its own means very little. A score tells you one location ranks above another. It does not explain why.
Zombie Bases compares very different places under consistent zombie outbreak assumptions. A remote island, mountain fortress and underground military complex cannot be judged by one characteristic. Each succeeds for different reasons. Each fails for different reasons.
Real places. Real constraints.
No fictional safe zones. No imaginary fortresses. No unlimited resources. Each location is judged using existing geography, climate, infrastructure and natural environment.
Balance always wins
One exceptional strength cannot compensate for five serious weaknesses. A mountain fortress without farmland will struggle. An island without fresh water will struggle. A bunker dependent on fuel deliveries will struggle.
Every strength has a cost
Isolation improves security and limits trade. Large communities provide skills and consume more. Strong fortifications improve protection and require maintenance. There are no free advantages.
Why no base scores ten
No real location is perfect. Climate, resources, infrastructure, population, access, maintenance and disease all matter. A perfect score would imply the conversation is over. The debate is the point.
Assumptions matter
The outbreak is global. Modern supply chains fail. Government support disappears. Communities become responsible for survival. The infected remain a persistent threat, especially near population centres.
